Urban Administration refers to the Citizen level where maintenance of land records and maintaining law and order is governed by the administration of the Urban population.
It is a big organization that takes care of street lights, garbage collection, water supply, and keeping the streets and the market clean. Further It is also responsible for ensuring that diseases do not break out in the city. And also runs schools, hospitals, and dispensaries. Moreover it also makes gardens and maintains them. It is called a ‘Municipal Council’ in smaller towns.
Municipal Corporation collects money in the form of tax. People pay tax to the government for the services the government provides (Property tax and Profession tax). People who own homes have to pay a property tax as well as taxes for water and other services.
Property tax however forms only 25-30 percent of the money that a Municipal Corporation earns.
*In recent times, to save money the commissioners of several municipalities across the country had hired private contractors to collect and process garbage.
*The government of India launched the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October 2014 to promote cleanliness in both Rural and Urban Areas.
