Plants with green and tender stems are called herbs. They are usually short and may not have many branches are called herbs.
Some plants develop branches near the base of stem. The stem is hard but not very thick. Such plants are called shrubs.
Plants with weak stems that cannot stand upright but spread on the ground are called creepers. While those that take support and climb up are called climbers.
Some plants are very tall and have hard and thick stem. The stems have branches in the upper part, much above the ground. Such plants are called trees.
The part of leaf by which it is attached to the stem is called petiole. The broad, green part of the leaf is called lamina.
The lines on the leaf are called veins. A prominent line in the middle of the leaf is called the midrub. The design made by veins in a leaf is called the leaf venation. If the design is net-like on both sides of midrib, the venation is reticulate. In the leaves of grass the veins are parallel to one another. This is parallel venation.
Water comes out of leaves in the form of vapor by a process called transpiration. Plants release a lot of water into the air through this process.
Leaves prepare their food in the presence of sunlight and a green colored substance present in them. For this, they also use water and carbon dioxide. This process is called photosynthesis. Oxygen is given out in this process. The food prepared by leaves ultimately gets stored in different parts of plant. The leaves get water from the roots.
The main root is called tap root and the smaller roots are called lateral roots. The plants do not have a main root. All roots seem similar are called fibrous roots.
The prominent parts of the open flower are called the petals. While in a closed bud, the most prominent parts made of small leaf-like structures are called sepals. The inner parts of the flower which are more than one are called stamens while the innermost part of flower is called the pistil. The lowermost and swollen part of the pistil is called ovary. Small bead like structures inside the ovary are called ovules
